This word spinner set is a wonderful way for children to practice rhyming word families and start gaining phonetic awareness.  Children can assemble the gear spinner and front plate onto the back frame and start spinning the gear to make a whole set of rhyming words.  Each front plate and gear have a matching picture that aids the child in selecting the correct discs and pronouncing the word family correctly without adult assistance.  Only real and child appropriate words are included on each disc, so this is a great way for children to become more familiar with phonetic sounds while expanding their vocabulary.
16 short vowel word families are included in this set: at, am, an, ap, ad, ag, ed, et, ell, est, in, it, op, ot, uck, ug.  Beginning sounds contain both single letters and two letter blends.  As an example, the -at disc includes the following words: bat, cat, chat, fat, flat, hat, mat, pat, rat, sat, slat, spat, that, vat.
The set comes with 8 front plates and 8 gears, laser engraved on both sides for a total of 16 word families.  Four back frames are included so multiple children can work with different discs at the same time.  A convenient storage box is included that holds all the pieces and keeps them organized with individual slots for each matching front plate and gear set.
Back frame measures 5.375" square while the gears and front plates are a little less than 5" in diameter.  The whole storage box is about 6.25" wide, 8" deep, and 4" high (6" with the back frames protruding).  Back frame and gears are made from 1/4" birch plywood and front plates are made from 1/8" birch plywood.  All materials are laser engraved, sanded smooth, and left in the natural unfinished condition.
This is a great resource to help children start the wonderful journey of reading!
